Stop Using AI

From My April 2024 Newsletter

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently all the rage. People are wondering—Will it replace my job? Can it help me find a job? Will it ultimately destroy humanity?

According to several articles, including this one from Simplilearn, AI excels at decision-making, availability, efficiency, productivity, and advanced data analysis.

On the other hand, it is costly to implement, lacks emotion and creativity, and cannot learn from its own experience and mistakes.

If there is one group that’s should fear being replaced by AI, I think it should be CEOs.  Think about what they are supposed to do---analyze data and make recommendations at a strategic level---exactly what AI excels at.

One company, Dictador, has already taken the step

I’m still watching to see how job seekers and career professionals use AI . So far, I don’t like what I see.

(What have you seen, Ed?)

First, last year, articles written by career professionals detailed how they were writing and advising, and then using AI to improve their work.  This year, I’ve seen articles stating how AI is a great way to start.  (Sigh) Here we go; down the proverbial slippery-slope.

Secondly, you must remember how AI comprises a bunch of computer algorithms that take input , process the data, and provide output. Given the same set of inputs, it will output the same results. It’s no different from gaming programs.

For example, as a judge for a national resume certification, I read resumes and cover letters every week. A couple of months ago, I noted how so many cover letters seemed the same. Same general style; same sentence structure; same introduction; same use of phrases.  Yes, so many people “excited” to apply.”

They input the same data to the AI and receive pretty much the same output.

Meanwhile, which candidates to I notice? The ones that are different. The ones that clearly put effort into their writing. The ones that demonstrate skill and show genuine passion for their work, without needless fluff.

In short, AI could hurt you more than help you:

  • You won’t stand out.

  • It won’t help you with your why.

  • The results might not reflect your genuine self.

You’ll be just like the young woman in The Twilight Zone episode Number 12 Looks Just like You.

In spite of my admonition (Stop Using AI), you will use it. We all will. Just be sure to use it correctly.

That means doing your own writing first (with or without a professional writer).
